How do you get validation rules / text to work on an access page?

I have validation rules on two fields, both text. How do I get these rules to
work with my access page? When I enter data that is invalid in the text field
on the acess page and click on save, it dispalys a E FAIL error, not the text
I expect from the validation rule.
