How do you hide or delete items

How do you delete or hide things like paragraphs and text boxes. I
am using the version of word that was released with Windows XP.

Triple clicking on a paragraph selects it. Just hit the delete key. By the way,
no Office product was released with Windows XP. The operating sytems and the
office product are not related (except that both are by Microsoft).
