how do you keep documents containing images small < 10 mb

I am trying to produce a newsletter in publisher containing several images
20k jpg but the document is growing to a size of 60+mb. Can you constrain
the size, so that it can be converted into a small pdf file<1mb?

You are using Publisher 2000 or earlier. These versions converted all
images to raw uncompressed BMPs internally, so the filesize balloons when
you import highly compressed files (such as JPEG). Publisher 2002 and later
fix this.

The filesize of the .pub and the filesize of the .pdf do not correlate,
especially not with Publisher 2000 and earlier. PDF will compress the
images and remove any from the file that are not used (Publisher 2000 did
not delete pictures from the file when they were deleted from the
publication). You can adjust the options for image compression in the
preferences of your PDF program.

Thanks working with publisher 2003. Would still like to kno if you can make
original document smaller when pics are embedded?

Yes, you can, using the Compress Pictures button on the Picture toolbar
(requires SP1 or later to be installed, available free from
http://office.microsoft.com/)

If you need to reduce the size of your PDF file rather than the actual
Publisher file, this is not recommended as it will permanently lose
resolution from the pictures in your publication, whereas allowing the PDF
software to recompress the pictures will allow you to go back and create a
higher-resolution PDF file at a later date.
