how do you prevent extraneous styles from becoming embedded?

I'm a writer and use styles a lot. Frequently, by the end of a project, my
styles list is a mess with entries such as "1. text 2", "2. text 2", instead
of just "text 2". How can I clean this up, first of all, and secondly, how
can I prevent it from happening in the first place?

It should happen a lot less.
Create styles for every style you use, and then don't apply a style and then
apply some other additional format to it. For instance, if you apply Heading
1 and then bold it, without changing the style to be bold, then you'll have
TWO styles...
