How do you read a Works file into Word?

Cannot read a Works file with Word (Office XP, Windows XP). When you open the file - even with the file type set to "Works 200 (*.wps) - all you get is garbage. Doesn't Microsoft even recognize their own products?
There is a converter download for Word 97/2000, but it's files are older than those already installed, and I don't trust replacing them.

I had the same problem when the newest Works came out.
The only solution I found was to have my correspondents convert their docs
to RTF.
Let's see if someone offers a better idea.
