How do you retain style formatting?

Very often after we format a document and reopen it, all the formatting
changes. Sometimes before we close the document and scroll back to the
beginning, any formatting we've applied changes. For example, we'll use our
customized style to insert bullets. The bullet setting may be for one inch
over. After saving, we open the document and the bullets may be two inches
across.

Any ideas?
