How does one link an item to an existing contact

I use Entourage for Mac 2004; when I attempt to link a new item (task, note,
calendar event etc.) to an existing Contact, I select Link to an
existing>contact; immediately I get a window with all of my 600 contacts.
even attempting to go thru my categories consumes a lot of time. Anybody
know of a shortcut?
