How does one retain the zero in a zipcode in Publisher

Using Excel to store names and addresses, there are states in the northeast
where the zipcode begins with a zero. However when printing addresses using
mail merge in Publisher, the lead zero is dropped. How do we prevent that
from happening??

Format the field as text... Or save the database as a CSV (comma delimited).
