How does one switch from metric to imperial?

I am looking for some basic how to. How does one switch from metric to
imperial measurements? I tried everything I can thing of but still my
documents are in metric.

Prior to Word 2007
Tools > Options > General > Measurement Units

Word 2007
Office button > Word Options > Advanced > Display > Show measurements in
units of

Not sure if I understand your question, but there is an option to change
measurement units under tools, options, then the general tab
