How install Office 2002 Upgrade on a new computer

I have been using Office Pro for many years. In 2002 I bought the Upgrade
CD and installed it over my previous version. Now last month I bought a new
computer, hp Pavilion a1050y, with Windows XP. When I tried to install my
Office Pro 2002 CD it said it could not find a qualifying product. I don't
have any earlier CD's than the 2002. Now here's the question: What is the
best way to get a working Office?

a. Pay full retail and buy Office Pro 2003 from Microsoft.

b. Buy the cheapest old version of Office, install it, and then upgrade
with my 2002 CD.

c. Find a lower cost CD on eBay.

d. Is there a way to get Microsoft to confirm that I had previously
purchased Office and to give me a way to install the upgrade CD?

e. Any other advice you might have . . .

Thanks for any help.

PS. I do have MS Works 8.0 on my new computer. Is that a qualifying
product?

It's up to you how to acquire a previous version of Office in
order to use your Upgrade CD. Don't trust eBay for old
software as it may be scratched and be nothing more than
a coaster with no recourse. I would suggest purchasing a
"Full Version" of Office 2003 to be safe.

Thanks for your fast reply, Carey. I checked the link you gave for products
that qualify for Office 2003 upgrade and found that it does include MS
Works. I have MS Works on my system, but still the installation program
says "Cannot find a qualifying product". I even inserted the Works CD and
pointed it to look there but still no success. Is there something else that
I might inadvertently be doing wrong? Or could it be that Works was not a
qualifying product for Office XP Pro?

Microsoft Works is apparently not a qualifying product for the Office XP Upgrade.

Thanks Carey. Having discovered that the Full Version of Office 2003 Pro is
$499, this is what I did: I googled Office 97, and found a Full Version on
Amazon.com for $68. So I bought it (figured it was worth the risk), and
then installed my Office XP Pro Upgrade CD again. When it asked for a
qualifying product, I inserted the Office 97 CD, and all was well. It
accepted it and allowed me to install the Upgrade CD.

So now all is well. Thanks again.
