Hello,

I made it with FrontPage 2003 - how is it? :)

http://brians-pc.pcfire.net

You mean you want a critique? grit your teeth then;)

No text links - needed for text anchor links for search engines to follow
and to be accessible to everyone.

Lose the smiley s it's a business site not a homepage.

Make a templat that is unique to you, when your in business your image
count's so using a generic theme look is not a good idea.. and sadly enough
many people thing frontpage sites are no good, they might associate that
with your ablility to fix machines.

Have external links open in a new window .. or you just sending them away
from your site.
Your pages need more content if the site is to do well in the search
engine's.

Your graphics don't have alt attributes on them. Use the free FrontPage
addon TP_ErrOmi for that from http://solution-shelf.com

You don't have a privacy policy though you do have somewhat of a disclaimer
which needs NOT to be centered, it's harder to read. It's coloured in red
which is hard to read for some people.

You have far too many unnecessary graphics to other sites on the homepage ..
the created with frontpage again i would get rid of .. who cares? It's your
content they have come to see.

On the homepage you have two titles and the one you want to use should be in
first postion followed my descritption and keywords, your using fp03 but
talk about fp02 on the site. Since you have fp03 make a dwt then you can
change the look at will. You need to do some SEO (search engine optimization
work I'd join a free seo class.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SEO_Techniques/

Your page is not only not ranked by google it's greyed out, depending on how
long you have had this site .. this is a problem for you.

I'd make yourself or buy a template and start using include pages for the
menu so you don't have to go back or just use the site map to navigate
around the site.
Work on more content for each page.

hth Tina

Hi Brian

is this your first go ? if so it is not to bad and you have
learnt some of the basics of site design using frontpage.

Tinas comments are relevant, you probably need to have a
look at some of the template sites around and continue to
learn FP and you will find it will be an ongoing experience.

If your site is already active and you are working from it I
would suggest that you create a subweb, then publish your
main site there as well, use this copy to learn with and as
a test area.

You don't necessarily need a complex all singing / dancing
site - a quick loading well thought out site suits the
majority of visitors

It is not a quick experience but you will get it.

good luck

Brian,

I went to your Video page. I have two children and I'm used to
multi-tasking in a big way, but when all of your videos started playing
different content at the same time, it overloaded me.

Listen to Tina. She'll think of a million things you haven't thought of.
Do every single one of them. Seriously! :)

To get started you need to have a play, you can either do that by publishing
to a subweb on your domain, if your not comfortable with doing that at this
stage you can use a free host which has FrontPage Server Extensions
available.

First you will need to publish your site to your hard drive with another
name and if you have not already done so as a backup to, in that instance
name as the orginal but put backup at the end of the url with the date.

Basically though just play with making tables in FrontPage In earlier
verisons there is a selection of different layouts in Page Templates in
FrontPage 2003 they are in the Table Layouts and Cells under Tables. Here is
a typical layout just copy and paste the below code to notepad (gets rid of
the unwanted formatting) and thencopy and paste to between the body tags in
the Code View (html view) You can then play with it in Design View (Normal
View)

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
<tr>
<td valign="top" colspan="3">
&nbsp;</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="175">

</table>

this any help?

Hey Jim,

I just tried out one of your ad-ons, and immediately started getting pop-up
ads all over the place. I uninstalled your add-on, yet even without
publishing they seem to be all over the place, including on my web site. I
hope you have a good explanation, or a good lawyer.

Not sure what's going on with you, but it has nothing to do with my
software. I can assure you of that. I'd recommend you do a spyware scan on
your system.

I installed Spawn, and used it on a link on my local web file. I've tested
same the link a zillion times previously, and had never seen anything that
resembled a popup. Immediately after adding Spawn to the link, when I
clicked on it I got two different popup ads. The link was to an old copy of
the SF Chronicle stored in my files. I had also attempted to use Spawn on a
link on my web site (live link), which didn't seem to install, but
immediately I started getting popup ads all over the place there too. I
uninstalled Spawn; still got the ads. Then I removed all the HTML code added
with Spawn, and finally the popups stopped. I ran registry cleaner,
ad-aware, and Panda just to make sure, but haven't noticed any popups since.
BTW, the popup ads had my name on the title bar (jpeter.net: ) Is this
supposed to be some coincidence?

John,

There is NO adware, spyware or any other rogue software included with my
software. The code that Spawn inserts into your page is not going to cause
this. There are thousands of people using Spawn (including myself on
several of my Web sites) with none of these effects.

Since you said that you created a link using Spawn to a third-party site, it
is quite possible that the third-party site was popping up ads. We cannot
be responsible for the content you link to with our product.

If you have further questions concerning our software, please contact us via
our Web site.

Well I can tell you the same two popups attached themselves to copies of a
Chronicle page stored on my local computer immediately after installing
Spawn to the link. The same ads appeared every time I clicked on the link.
The popups to the link on my website were dynamic (different ones every
time), and had my name on the title bar preceding the specific ad. I've
never seen anything like that before on my links, and don't see them after
removing the Spawn HTML code. Other than that, I have no idea what's going
on.

John,

Add a pop-up with Spawn. After you do that, look at the HTML that is
created. It's quite simple. What you'll see is that it calls a function
called spawnJimcoPopup. That function takes a url parameter that specifies
the URL you point to with Spawn. If you look at the code in that function,
you can see that it does a window.open and passes in that URL.

There is nothing in that code that can pop-up any URL other than the URL you
specify. Nothing is hidden here. It's all right there for you to see. In
your case, you have said that you are linking to a third-party site. Then
when you click that link, it opens the popup and also opens some pop-up ads,
etc. It's quite clear to me that what's happening is that the third-party
site you are linking to is popping up content. There is now way that I can
control that. If you tell Spawn to link to a site that itself has automatic
pop-ups, the automatic pop-ups will pop-up just as though you went to that
site regularly.

Your first conclusion was that I had added bad code to your system, and you
reacted to that by threatening me with legal action. It seems to me that an
apology may be in order. :)

Jim,

I have no idea why installing Spawn resulted in popups to that link that
never appeared before or after. Seeing popups on my site with my name on
them in the title bar was also not a pleasant experience. They are not
there now, since removing the code. Any possibility your code got hacked, so
that when the java script opens up a popup window, an advertiser gets
connect to it? There's a possibility that there is absolutely no
relationship, some rare coincidence; but what would the odds of that be?

My threat was that I hope you have a good explanation or a good lawyer. You
could definitely get sued for that, if your ad-on was somehow involved and a
business had to shut down their web page looking for a solution (I was up
until 2AM cleaning it out). I know that if it were my software, I wouldn't
just immediately issue a disclaimer, saying that no link to a java script
installed for creating a popup window to a link could possible be connected
to resulting popups by the provider of the ad-on. Somebody is making money.

Spawn will never add anything to a page unless you explicitly invoke it.
Therefore, Spawn will not add popups to your page by just installing it.
That will never happen. 100% guaranteed.

They are not there now, since removing the code. Any possibility your

Not a chance. My code was not hacked. Is there a possibility that you have
spyware or adware on your computer that is being invoked when a pop-up
window opens (Spawn or not)? Absolutely! However, that has nothing to do
with my software.

There's a possibility that
there is absolutely no relationship, some rare coincidence; but what
would the odds of that be?

100%. I know without a doubt that my software is not causing pop-up ads to
display on your computer.

My threat was that I hope you have a good explanation or a good
lawyer. You could definitely get sued for that, if your ad-on was

I certainly will make that disclaimer. Once again, the code that Spawn
generates is not hidden from you. Just click on View / Source and you can
clearly see it and you can clearly see that it is not popping up any
advertisements.

Again, I'm not certain about what is happening to you, but I am 100% certain
that Spawn is not popping up any advertisements on your computer.

Be careful before you post slanderous remarks against anyone. That's the
JIMCO legal lesson of the day.

I trust your statement regarding your own complete lack of involvement in
the popup ads. I ended up having to republish the original report with the
link (from Onfolio) to get the popups to cease. It wasn't just eliminating
the obvious added popup window code; the file had to be completely
destroyed. This same procedure occurred on two separate instances of the
same link; one off the computer and one on the computer. Now that things
are back the way they were originally, the problem has ceased. The details
behind who's making the money will have to remain a mystery. It's really
obnoxious.

Also, I apologize if my statement regarding potential lawsuit material felt
harsh. Having my name all over the popup window with the ad, like it's my
ad, felt to me like identity theft, and not being able to get rid of it
(fortunately, destroying the files and starting over worked) was a little
overaggressive for my tastes, especially after midnight. I tried to stick
with the facts of what happened. The rest is still a mystery, and most
likely illegal.

John,

I'm still not sure about what could be causing this. If I were you, I would
not lower the alarm level. I know that it's not my software causing it.
Therefore, whatever it was, it's still there!

If I were troubleshooting this on my box, I would start up IE and then get a
user-mode dump of the process and see what's loaded into the process.
