How long does a document stay new in a document library?

Is the new indicator displayed for a certain period or do you need to open
the file in order for it to no longer stay in a new status?

I'm assuming you're referring to a Sharepoint library? You may want to use the link below to also post this in the MS Office
Sharepoint discussion group and include there the version of Office apps and Sharepoint you're working with.
