How low can you get?

Gil

Hi all,

We are implementing Project Server 2007:

In my company, the team members come to work, open the relevant excel
file, and there they see what assignment they need to work on on the
following days. Theses assignment can move between 2-20 hours long,
and are written by the team leader. The team members are asked to fill
actual work values in this file.
On the other hand, the project manager is handling the level above:
20-80 hours long assignments. Most of our projects are 3-12 months
long, and use up to 10 resources.

My organization still wants to control the team members with detailed
assignments, but afraid that it will be impossible to assign and get
progress reports on these kind of assignments , through PWA.
Furthermore, will it be possible to handle project plans with so many
lines (can get to 1000 lines all the way down to the bottom-level
assignments).

I don't know which is the better option for us...

1) Keep managing more high-level tasks (like modules) in Project
professional, publish them and get team members to report on these
task through PWA, AND also use Excel files for the bottom-level
detailed task, like today, which means that team members will have to
report in two places.

Or

2) Manage all the levels of the project, down to few-hours-long tasks,
and have team members report only on one place (PWA).

Grateful as always,
Gil

Gil:

Project And Project Server can certainly handle this requirement, but
whether or not it's right for your organization is a recommendation that
requires deep knowledge of your organization and its tolerances. I wouldn't
solicit or offer such broad recommendations based on a newsgroup exchange.
