how many character are allowed in a cell

I tried to look this up on the board as well as the Excel help - could not
find the answer. Anybody know?

Look at excel's help for Specifications.

Different versions of excel have different limits.

xl95 was 255
xl97-xl2003 is about 32k.

I don't recall xl2007.
