How many characters are in a MS Office serial number? Also, what would it
look like? I take it it is different than the product ID?

The Office CD keys for installation have 25 characters. More information on its location is available on this MS page in the "CD

You're correct that the generated Product ID shown in help is not the same as the installation key code.
