I've been told that outlook gets bonkers when the data file nears 2 gig and
I've been having trouble with it taking a long time to open emails once I
click on them.

You're dangerously close to the limit. I wouldn't trust ther PST past 1.5
GB. Split your PST into multiple PSTs or archive your older data.

Archive mail now! (Substantial amount - by date)
Then compact
Note an Archive file is also subject to same size restrictions
Versions earlier than 2003 (Unicode format) can baulk from 1.6gb and fail at
2gb

Thank you both for your help. That did it. I had been deleting and
archiving, but hadn't compressed. Pst now down to 221m
