How "safe" is PPT password protection against modification?

I currently use PPT97 and I would like to protect presentations against
modification - I don't mind printing.
Unfortunately I have complex links so that a conversion into PDF is not
an option.

Is it worth getting PPT2003 for the password protection or is it quite
easy to work around that?

I heard about "Thinstall" and "QPresenter", that claim to be really
safe.

Any information is greatly appreciated.
