How to access Office Menu object/collection

I'm writing an add-in and have found many useful articles on how to access
and add things to the CommandBar. What I am looking for is a way to add
something to the Office menu (File, Edit, View, etc.) or to a submenu. Also
to check the values of a particular menu (items listed in the menu, like:
New, Open, Close, Save, etc.). I am unable to locate the object or any
references to the menu items.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
