How to add a section to a 2D stacked bar?

M

Marc J.

I am an infrequent user of Visio but it seems like a great program.

I was trying to do something that seemed like it should be very simple but
proved daunting.

I was in the Chart Objects view and I selected the 2D stacked bar graphic.
It defaults onto the screen with 3 colored segments. I want 4 colored
segments. How do I add another segment to a 2D stacked bar?

Thanks very much.

I assume that you're using the 'Divided Bar 2' shape, found on the Charting
Shapes stencil. That is a grouped shape, which has 3 sub-shapes, as well
as control points in the group to provide handles for managing the size of
the subshapes.

You can review the ShapeSheet for the Group and for each of its subshapes
to see how intertwined it is, but what you are seeking is not as simple as
dropping in another rectangle segment, unfortunately.

If you want to explore creating shapes of your own, you can use the online
MSDN SDK material, such as the ShapeSheet Reference
(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms427024.aspx), and also the
common ShapeSheet tasks
(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms427030.aspx) sections.

Your best bet for learning to create automated shapes of this type is to
start with the Visio Inside Out books, and to take a look at some of the
Visio blogs, etc. If you are interested, the Microsoft Visio Toolbox site
has a great list of Visio blogs you can review :
http://www.visiotoolbox.com/trainings.aspx?trainingid=5

Hope that helps!
