How to add watermark

J

Joe727

In Word Perfect you click Watermark to add a watermark.

Question 1 - how do you add a watermark in Word 2000 running on XP Pro?

Question 2- how do you make the watermark transparent?

Thanks

Joe

Joe, you can start by searching the topic "Watermark" in Word 2000 Help.
That brings up a good set of step-by-step instructions.

You can also go to http://support.microsoft.com and do a "Knowledge Base
Article ID Number Search" for 211324. That brings up a long article that
explains how to do it in detail, and should answer both your questions.

Joe, as an old WordPerfect user who used to do watermarks all the time, I
feel your pain. The process may not be as intuitive in Word, but it is
doable.

You may want to start by setting your Zoom magnification to "Whole Page."
Then View > Headers and Footers to bring up the document headers/footers.
The Header and Footer toolbar should also appear at this point. If you have
text in the document, you may want to click the Show/Hide Document Text
button to get it out of the way so you can concentrate on your watermark.

Where you go from here depends on what kind of watermark you want to create.
If it's straight text, you can Insert > Text Box and draw a box in the
middle of the page. Then type the text and format it, then right-click the
text box border and Format Text Box.to set up your formatting.

If your watermark is to be clip art, or a picture, or WordArt, then it's
Insert > Picture and the appropriate selection from the submenu. Again,
position your graphic in the middle of the page. It may be necessary for you
to right-click the graphic and Format Picture and set the Layout to be
either Behind Text or In Front of Text.

The Picture toolbar should automatically appear when you select your
graphic, and there are five buttons there (Image Control, More/Less
Brightness, More/Less Contrast) that you can play with to make your graphic
lighter or darker.

When you're done, click Close on the Header and Footer toolbar.

Hope this helps.

Well, why didn't you say so and save everyone's time?
You are getting nowhere fast because you are a
timewaster. If you have a decent printer, you can
often use it to add a watermark too, if you're doing
things like having documents vetted and don't need to
send the file with the watermark embedded in it. Than
again, if the recipient has a decent printer, save it
as a printer document with that printer's watermark.
Enough - there are a myriad ways to do it. Did you
even really TRY to comprehend Help? Or are your
prejudices in the way? Be honest with yourself.

Hi DDM - thanks for the detailed instructions. They are clearer than the
ones in the Word Help file.

1 - I still can't figure out how to move the watermark (it's an image)
around the page. Right now it's at the top center of the page. I want to
move it to the left side of the page about 1/4 down from the top.

2 - I am having trouble making it transparent so that I can type over it.
When I click on it to make it transparent as directed to in the Help files,
parts of the graphic disappear.

Any additional help is appreciated.

You're very welcome, Joe.

1-Well lemme see. I'm a little out of my depth here, so bear with me. I just
inserted a graphic image in a document and right-clicked it. I selected
Format Picture from the shortcut menu, and the Layout tab in the Format
Picture dialog box. Under Wrapping style, if you select anything other than
In line with text, you should be able to drag your image around. You might
try that. Then, you can come back to this dialog box and click the Advanced
button on the Layout tab. On the Picture Position tab, you can experiment
with the settings to position your graphic. I tried Horizontal > Absolute
Position = 0" to the left of Margin, and Vertical > Absolute Position = .25"
below Page and it seemed to work. But as I say, you may have to experiment.

2-Again, remember that we're working in the View > Header and Footer
environment. You'll find that when you click Close to return to the normal
document view your graphic will fade considerably all by itself. One thing
you might look into is the buttons on the Picture toolbar. It should appear
automatically if you click your image. If it doesn't, the View > Toolbars >
Picture. You might try the settings on the Image Control button, or you can
play with the More/Less Brightness and More/Less Contrast buttons to see if
you can't get it to the level you want. You can always click the Reset
Picture button (Picture toolbar) to get it back to its original state, if
necessary.

Hope this helps. How I do miss WordPerfect 6.0 (sometimes)!

Ok - I see how the transparency works, but in WP8 you can actually set the
amount of transparency you want. I guess I'll just have to live with what
Word thinks is best for me - lol.

I am still having trouble moving the picture. Despite your detailed
instructions, the picture won't budge. All of the buttons on the Picture
Position tab are greyed out. I also have the watermark set as "behind the
text". Of course, at this point I haven't added any text to the document.

Thanks again.

Interesting post. I did mention it, in my second post.

I have an excellent printer, however, it won't e-mail documents with a
watermark embedded in Word files.

My comprehension skills are adequate. Thanks for asking.

Ok - I finally got it to work by simply starting over and using a .jpg
instead of a .bmp.

However, when I switch from full page mode to normal mode, the watermark
disappears from the screen even though when the document is e-mailed or
printed, the watermark is present behind the text.

Also, is there any way to make the watermark more transparent? I would like
to increase the transparency to 50% more than the default Word sets it at.

Thanks

Joe, note that a watermark, like a header or footer, will not appear in
Normal View. Just go to Print Layout View. As far as the transparency is
concerned, I think your options are on the Picture tab of the Format Picture
dialog box. Or you might try the "Watermark" setting under the Image Control
button on the Picture toolbar. Whenever I've used that one, it fades the
graphic almost to the point of invisibility.

Ok - At least I got the watermark to work thanks to your help.

When I click watermark under image control it disappears - LOL. At least I
can now add a semi-transparent watermark and perhaps I'll finally figure out
how to make it more so.

I appreciate your help and I've compiled and saved your instructions. It's
quite amazing how complicated this whole process is in Word compared to Word
Perfect. I began using Word several years ago because when I e-mailed Word
Perfect documents to business associates, they had no idea how to open them
even though they had MS Word installed.

Many of them now just got to the point where they want Word documents
e-mailed that I used to snail-mail or hard copy fax to them - another LOL.
Until this point, I simply created those documents in Word Perfect since I
printed them out for distribution.
