How to allocate percentages of resources to projects?

I have a resource pool to which several projects are linked. I'd like to
allocate a certain percentage of each resource to different projects. For
example, I'd like ResourceX to be available for 50% of it's capacity on
Project A, 30% on Project B, and 20% on Project C. How do I do this?

I have read that I select sharer project has preference, or whatever the
exact wording is for that option, when I link the resource pool to a project,
but this doesn't help. No matter what I select there, when I change the max
units in the project, it also changes it in the resource pool.

Thank you

Hello DesertCyclist,

Sorry, when you have a resource pool situation, the max. unit is visible
to all sharer files because the resource is only defined once, in the
pool file.

You'll need to ensure that when the resource is assigned, the person
assigns specifically at 50%, 30% as necessary to prevent the
overallocation if the tasks overlap. Unless the resource is fully
utilized for everyday on every project, you run the risk of "under
utilizing" the resource however.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks, Julie. This is bad news. Without a centralized way of doing this,
there is a good chance that an incorrect allocation will be made somewhere.
Bummer. But thank you for your reply. :)

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback.

I understand your concern, but remember, you can look at the
resource's allocation in the pool file to discover whether you have an
overallocation or not. While it's tempting to limit a resource to 50%
on Project A, 20% on Project B and so on, I'd suggest that someone needs
to be looking at overall allocation and making some priority decisions
about the projects as a whole.
