How to avoid that 2007 files grow too large when saved in 2003 for

A

ajol

When I save files created in the new 2007 formats to 2003 formats (for use by
some of my partners who do not use Office 2007) these files grow too large.
Is there a way to avoid this?

I suspect the difference you are seeing is due to the new file formats. The
new Office Open XML file formats allow the files to be stored in a
compressed state that is around 75% smaller than the old 97-2003 file format
which is binary. When you open the file is it uncompressed and when you
close it, the file is compressed again (They are actually ZIP files using an
associated application extension). So what you are seeing might be the
expected behavior. Note that an exception to the general 75% rule is
PowerPoint since it's more graphic oriented (graphics are not compressed)
and the change in size isn't as as great as the other file types.

One way to determine this is to compare the file sizes. What's the size of
the Word 2007 doc and what is the size when saved as Word 2003?
