How to change default web browser in Entourage

E

ella138

I just picked up a new ibook today and am trying to set it up. I woul
like Entourage to open up Internet Explorer when I click on a link i
an email. Right now it opens Safari. Does anyone know how I can chang
this? I don't see anywhere in the preferences where I can do this.

Hi,
you can change this behaviour in Safari's preferences. Under the "General"
tab, you'll have to change the default web browser from Safari to Internet
Explorer. Now that's what you wanted to know, but here's my recommendation:
unless you have a really convincing argument why you would want to do that,
DON'T! Safari is in my opinion way superior to Internet Explorer, and one of
the reasons is that Internet Explorer is no longer being developed, so it is
actually a security risk to use it. Also, in these days, I would not want to
have to deal with a web browser that doesn't do tabs, so that's why I
wouldn't even consider using IE, except perhaps to open the odd webpage that
doesn't open with Safari. Give Safari a try, and I'm sure you'll like it;
it's part of the Mac experience! ;-)

thanks Michel
But when I open up some attachments in safari the picture doesn'
always fully load. I'm not at all familiar with Safari and don't kno
how to fix this. In the old macs (OS9) this was usually a sign tha
there was not enough memory. I don't know what it means now. I just go
the new ibook last night and am stuggling through 0S10.4.2. I like it
however there is much to learn.
Thanks

Hi Ella,
"not enough memory" is not a problem under OS X, as the system automatically
allocates each application the necessary amount of memory. I have found
Safari to be fairly compatible with 99% of the sites I visit, so I'm not
familiar with your problem. What kind of attachments are you dealing with?
And do they open up properly in Internet Explorer? Just a suggestion: save
attached files to your hard disk before you open them, and see if that makes
a difference. It might also be worth asking questions related to that on
Apple's discussion forum.

Michel, as my husband is in real estate many attachments we get are fro
the TREB (Toronto Real Estate Board) site. They are listings wit
pictures of houses. The listing loads, but the picture only partiall
loads. I also find Safari painfully slow. I know that there must me
setting in it (or in my computer) that is affecting the speed but
don't know what it could be. The new ibook I'm using is a 1.42 Gh
PowerPC G4. It is a much faster machine than my old ibook (3 years old
yet the internet seems to work so much slower. Where is the "Appl
discussion forum" you mention. How do I get to it?

Hello again,
I'm not familiar with that site, so it might be worth posting questions on
the Apple Discussion forum. Here's the link:
<http://discussions.info.apple.com/safari/>. Before you do that, see if any
of Apple's articles on the Safari support site cover your problem:
<http://www.apple.com/support/safari/>. And another suggestion: if Safari
misbehaves on one particular website only, go to that site and select
Safari>Report Bugs to Apple. While this will not solve your problems for the
moment, it might be that Apple fixes Safari in a future update, so keep your
fingers crossed.
If all this doesn't work, try using another web browser, Firefox (which you
must have heard of, I'm sure): <http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/>.
Again, if you really want to use Internet Explorer, just do it. However, in
the rapidly changing world of the internet, it's not really safe to use a
browser whose development was discontinued some time ago. Also, once you
start using tabbed browsing, you'll never want to go back to a browser which
doesn't do that.

Don't confuse "no longer developed" with "security risk". There are no known
security defects with Mac IE, otherwise we would be addressing them, at
least for the full length of the Mac IE support era, which is ending shortly
(Dec 31st, 2005).

Unfortunately, the link to that support on Mactopia's IE FAQ is broken, but
I think this is it: <http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=6874>, and
for Mac products in general is
<http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifesupsps#Macintosh_Products>

Nonetheless, switching to another browser before the Mac IE support vanishes
is probably a good idea.

Try the following

Under the Entourage menu, choose mail and news prefs.
Then under the html section, ensure that display complex html messages and
allow online access to display complex html messages are ticked. Close the
dialog box and then try and view the messages again. Does this work?

Also ensure that u have the latest updates as there may be a fix in the
software updates that have not been downloaded and applied to entourage

What operating system are you using? In Mac OS X 10.3 or later, you'll have
to launch Safari and set the default browser in the General section of the
preferences. Simply select Firefox from the dropdown menu, and if it's not
there, select "Other" and browse the Applications folder to select Firefox.
In versions of Mac OS X earlier than or equal to 10.2, the default browser
can be set in the System Preferences, in the Network section, if I remember
correctly; it's such a long time ago! ;-).

Same thing! You set your default browser in the Preferences of Safari. I
know that seems stupid and that it should be in System Preferences, but
there you go. Just open Safari, go to preferences and set Firefox as the
default browser. Quit Safari and you're done.

I don't know how to say this in any other way: Open Safari, go to
Preferences, set the default browser to Firefox, quit Safari. Done.

Nathan:

It was my impression that Microsoft had modified its position in regards to
the Mac and was going to continue developing IE for the Mac platform.

Is this not right ?

It will be a shame if the company decides to end the development of the
software. Despite the fact that I am currently running Safari as my primary
browser, I have only recently switched because of (1) the lack of updates
and continued development efforts and mostly (2) because of the fact that IE
does not support tab browsing which has become a major convenience to anyone
browsing the Internet.

The Mac's version of IE has a much nicer interface and visual appeal than
that for Windows. This browser could really be improved and become a great
tool for users in general.

This is not right. Microsoft announced that they were ceasing development of
IE Mac over two years ago! This was largely due to the fact that Apple,
which had used IE as the default browser on the Mac or about 6 years, and
now released Safari (in Jaguar), improved it, and made it the default, and
it was good. Whatever the original business reasons for MS developing the
free IE Mac in the first place, plus the 5-year agreement with Apple that
made IE and OE the default internet apps having long terminated, there was
no good reason for them to continue. Instead MS announced that they would
work with Safari. You can expect future developments in Office Mac that
involve interaction with a web browser to be designed to work first and
foremost with Safari.
It will be a shame if the company decides to end the development of the
software. Despite the fact that I am currently running Safari as my primary
browser, I have only recently switched because of (1) the lack of updates

Exactly, among other reasons. Never mind the shame.
The Mac's version of IE has a much nicer interface and visual appeal than
that for Windows.

That's true enough. Mac IE 5.2 for OS X had some features first. Presumably
the new IE 7 coming for Windows Vista will have a lot of new features.
Meanwhile over here on the Mac you've got Safari and about half a dozen
other browsers to check out.

P.S. It seems rather silly to give this thread "Highest Priority", so I've
taken it off this message, at least.

I think you may have confused IE for Mac with IE for Windows. Microsoft
originally announced that they were not going to update IE for Windows, but
that they'd only release the new version as part of the Windows Vista
operating system. And yes, they did change their position, if I'm informed
correctly, as they seem to be releasing IE 7 for Windows XP, too.

There are no plans for any future development of IE for Macintosh. Safari
(and more generally WebKit) is the browser technology offered by the OS
vendor (i.e., Apple), and will be the suggested browser alternative.

This is probably veering outside the topic parameters of this group, but I
would hope that if Microsoft is going to use Safari as the default Mac
browser for its applications, it will improve the functionality of Outlook
Web Access using Safari. It's horrible right now -- doesn't look anything
like it does on the Windows side when using IE, and is very user-unfriendly
and difficult to navigate. Unfortunately, my company does not allow
connections to the Exchange server from off campus, so I can't use Entourage
from my iBook at home and am stuck with Web access.
