how to change the label in a Figure cross-reference with chapter numbers

I have figure captions with chapter numbers like Figure 1.2 where the
chapter number was pulled from the Heading 1 style.

I need cross references to look like Fig. 1.2 instead of Figure 1.2

The technique that works when there is no chapter number doesn't work
in this case, which is to use a field that looks like this:

{ QUOTE {REF _Ref111111 \h } \* "Arabic" }

The above field returns just the number from a caption that does not
have a chapter number, but it seems to return just the chapter number
when the chapter number is in front of the figure number.

Is there a way to get both the chapter number and the figure number
for my cross reference?

Thanks,

Brian Murphy

One way is to manually bookmark only the caption number and then insert a
cross-reference to the bookmark (instead of having Word automatically
generate hidden bookmarks for the figures). Type "Fig."

Alternatively, you can redefine the hidden bookmark after it has been
inserted by Word. Select just the caption number, then Insert | Bookmark. In
the Bookmark dialog box, click "Hidden bookmarks." Click "Location" if "Name"
is selected (and vice versa). Word highlights the name of the bookmark at the
insertion point. click Add to redefine the bookmark. Update the
cross-reference with F9.
