I suspect you mean "minimize" instead of "close". If you just want to see
the desktop without completely stopping Word, press one of the "flying
windows" keys and the D key together; or click the desktop icon in the
taskbar next to the Start button. That will reduce all open windows to the
taskbar buttons.

If you really do want to close all open Word documents at once, hold the
Shift key while you click the File menu, and then choose Close All.

WinKey*+M will minimize all windows. WinKey+D is better, though, because it
goes direct to the desktop *and* is a toggle (that is, when you press it
again, it restores all your windows just as they were before.

*WinKey = the key to the left of ALT and spacebar or to the right of ALT and
spacebar, both with a Windows logo.

Also, you may have a Desktop QuickLaunch shortcut (I do in Windows 2000).
