How to connect documents to one large document in Word?

Is there some kind of advanced function in Word that will let me connect the
chapters (separate documents) of my thesis to one big document where the page
numbers will be ok ready to print?

You can use the Insert>File dialog box, and choose to "Insert as
Link". Repeat for each document to be inserted. Then you can work on
the individual documents for content and use the combined document for
(say) TOC creation.
