How to convert TIFF files?

I recently just purchased a scanner. I'm scanning old pictures that are
around 4x4 or 4x6 in that range. I also edit the pictures to crop sections
out. When i scan the pic it saves it as a tiff extension.. I'm not sure how
to convert it to jpeg or should i even be doing that . The thing is that
tiff pics are rather large, say about 9-20 megs. Pics i've taken with my
digital camera are only around 180 KB Is there anything i can do to decease
the size of the pic?

Also how do i resize a smaller pic into a 5x7? When i go to print and
choose 5x7 it prints out as the original 4x4... Why is this...

The scanner software should give you the option of saving files in other
formats such as GIF, JPEG...
If you are using Windows XP you should have Microsoft Picture Manager. This
allows you to open a TIFF file and, using the Export feature, save it in
another format.
Unfortunately, MS Photo Editor will not pen Tiff files

best wishes
