How to copy Outlook 2002 files to Office 2003?????

R

Roy

I am currently running Outlook 2002 on Windows 2000.

Next week, I am getting a DELL, DUDE, running WindowsXP and
Office 2003.

How do I go about copying by inbox, sent items, calendar,
deleted items over to the new p.c..

I am also interested in knowing how do I copy over the
files that stores all the e-mail addresses of people you
reply to.

Thanks.

All data is stored in a pst-file. Copy it over to your new computer.

To access that pst-file in Outlook choose;
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

To set it as the default delivery location;
Tools-> E-mail Accounts...-> button Next-> use the dropdownlist below

So by going to File-> Open-> Outlook Data File I now where
I have to go to save my *.pst file. Let's say I copy it to
a USB storage device.

How do I import this *.pst file from the USB Storage device
onto my new pc to replace the *.pst file on the new
machine? Would very much appreciate if you would provide
detail instructions for me.

Also, e-mail addresses are stored in a file besides *.pst.
In Outlook 2002 when you reply to a sender it does not get
automatically added to your address book. But when you
type in the first few names of an e-mail address, Outlook
automatically fills in the remainder of that infromation.
Where does Outlook store that information and how do I copy
that file over to my new computer.

Thanks, really appreciate it.

You don't import the file - copy it to the directory of your choice (My
Documents works well if you back that up on a regular basis.) Delete the
new .pst file created in Outlook. Open Outlook and when it complains -
point it to your My Documents .pst file and it will happily start using that
one.

You also have to make sure you're using a profile with the same name as the
..nk2 file, since they're profile-sensitive.

I am planning on copying my Outlook.pst file from my OLD
COMPUTER onto a USB storage device.

I go over to my NEW COMPUTER delete the Outlook.pst file.

Then on my NEW COMPUTER I copy the Outlook.pst file from my
USB storage device in place of the Outlook.pst file I just
deleted.

Will this work?

And after deleting the Outlook.pst file on my NEW COMPUTER
do I need to reboot my system before copying the
Outlook.pst file from my USB storage device.

This way I have my mail set up in the original place it was
intended.

Also, how do I copy the Outlook.nk2 file over to my new
Computer and what do you mean by, "make sure you're using a
profile with the same name as the ..nk2 file, since they're
profile-sensitive." I did not even know I set up a
profilem unless if you are talking about my E-mail Account
Set UP profile under TOOLS --> E-mail Accounts --> Add a
new Account.

Thanks for all your help. I just want to be sure I get it
correct before I start implementing the switchover. Thank
again to everyone for all the help you are providing.

Don't overwrite one .PST file with another -- Outlook gets confused and
things don't work right. Just put the old .PST file wherever is convenient
for you and then point Outlook to it. You can remove the other file from
Outlook via File | Data File Management.

The file I was referring ot was Outlook.nk2 where all
e-mail addresses are stored.

That file is where the autosuggest cache resides. Those are the addresses
you've typed in the To field and do not (necessarily) correspond with the
addresses in your Contacts folder. The NK2 file should have a file name to
match your mail profile name and it's usually stored in the hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

Alternatively, the OP can remove the old Outlook.pst, put the new on in its
place and create a brand new profile to point to it. It's the interaction
with the old profile that can lead to trouble.

Hey Brian,

Can you tell me how to do what you are suggesting? Also, I
do not know what you mean by OP???. And where do you
create these profiles that everyone is talking about.

Thanks,

Roy.

"OP" means "Original Poster". That would be you.

Profiles are created in Control Panel's Mail applet. Start>Control
Panel>User Accounts>Mail>Show Profiles>Add. If you do not follow Jocelyn's
advice about using an entirely new name for your PST file and wish to use
"Outlook.pst", overwriting an existing PST of the same name, then you must,
with Outlook closed, create a new profile using the aforementioned applet.
Just start creating a new profile, adding your account(s), the Outlook Data
files (pointing to the Outlook.pst you just created), the Outlook Address
Book, and so on.
