How to creat a query for a table

Hi I want to count the total number of certain values in a column and I
learned that I should do this via the query function, but since I am a newbie
to Access, I still can't figure out how to creat a query for my given table.
Some step by step help would be apprieciated.

1. Go to the Queries tab, in the db window
2. Select New
3. Select Design View
4. Add the table you want queried.
5. Close the Add Window
6. Highlight, then dran-n-drop the field you wish to count, into the
sectioned area at the bottom of the query window. Do this twice.
7. Click the Totals button. The funny looking E on the button bar.
8. Change Group By, under one of your fields, to Count.
9. View Detail
10. Find your answer.
