How to create a subdirectory that requires user login accounts w/

I want to allow my clients to visit my website, and sign in to only certain
pages. Can I create a subdirectory in Publisher 2007 so that I can have them
sign in to the subdirectory only, while having the rest of the pages
accessible to the public? How? Is there a better way?
Also, what is a good program that can deal with numerous user accounts, and
that can deal with payments for these accounts?

You could have a password protected folder for each account but it could be
a bit cumbersome.
