Is it a new stencil you are trying to make ?
The only tabs Visio has are these of the pages, and you cannot change their
colour as in Excel.

Yeah I am trying to create a new stencil with a rounded corner image on the
left hand side and a slanting image on the rightside and this complete image
will be in the background, overall it looks like a tab and the width of the
tab must be resizable depending on the text placed on the tab.

For a clear picture if you can see the stencil already there in the visio
2003..i.e.Windows and Dialogs stencil ... Tab control(tabs).. this has a
rounded corners at both side and it increases its width depending on the
value inserted in that...

I am trying to create a similar master but with different image at the
corners.

I cannot follow.
Are you a programmer ? I am pritty sure it cannot even be done through
programming.
Why do you suppose it could be done ? This is not open source software.

And now comes my famous "anyway".
Anyway, in the next version of Visio, the stencils and their use will have
gone through a major facelift.

It sounds like you want to design your own shapes, which can be done without
programming. There are several resources on the web that can assist here.
You might start with the posts about Shape Design on the Visio Insights
blog:

Also look here for more examples on the Shapesheet:
