How to cross reference EndNotes between documents?

Insert-cross reference lets one choose an endnote in the same document.
How can I cross reference an endnote from a different document?

Hi Harvey:

You can't *cross reference* to a different document. You *can* hyperlink,
provided the other document has been saved (when adding a hyperlink, Word
needs to add an anchor bookmark at the destination if there isn't one
already there).

How big is this document? Below about 2,500 pages, I am not sure why you
would publish two different documents. You might divide a long doc into
chapters or assignments during authoring, but for publication, you would
need a "reason" not to combine them into a single document. Production
editing is a lot simpler on a single document.

Good documentation practice suggests that cross-references outside the
current document should not go below the chapter level, to ensure that
subsequent changes to a document you do not "own" will not invalidate the
cross reference.

Or, as I would tell my staff, "If you cross-reference below the chapter
level, you will leave me with an ongoing maintenance problem. For which I
will kill you. Slowly. Very slowly."

Cheers
