how to customize my incoming messages to be in expanded form?

By default, incmoing messages are bold (blue) and arrive in Expanded form
until you open it. Once read the message is then reduced to its normal size
on screen. I have lost this setting. The message is only coloured and bold
but not expanded. How do i get the default settings back?
