how to cut a piece out of a line/wall?

In drawing the exterior walls of a house on a site plan, how can I cut
out a small section from the middle of a wall so that I can then use
the wall stencil to make that section of the house jut out?
What I have currently is a straight, uninterupted wall with the new
walls jutting out from there, so it looks like some sort of outbuilding
attached to the house rather than just a room jutting out from the
house. I just need to cut out that little straight section of the
original wall I drew.

You can drag one end of the wall away from the corner to where the opening
starts.

Then Ctrl-drag that wall shape to the corner from which you pulled the wall
away. In other words, where there was one wall, you need to make two walls.
Then you can build the out-jutting part of the house from there.

Your problem might be that you dragged the pre-made Room shape onto the
page. In this case, you need to ungroup the shape first, to get at the
separate walls. Ctrl + U is a quick way to do that, and click OK when the
warning about "sever from master" comes up. This just means that you are
breaking the link from the shape to it's original master (by splitting it
into separate shapes with the ungroup operation)

I think its much easier to simply place a correctly sized white shape (like
a rectangle) with no line, to cover the portion of the wall you do not want
to see.

ah, that was easy. thanks. I was envisioning somehow breaking the
wall into 3 segments, then selecting and cutting the middle piece.
there's nothing like overlooking the obvious.
