Assuming you have a properly costed, resource loaded schedule and a baseline.
Use the Physical%Complete method of Earned Value.
Tools/Options/Calculation Tab. Click Earned value and change to %Complete.
Select ALL your tasks. Select the task information icon from the tool bar.
Pull the advance tab.
Change the Earned Value method to Physical%Complete.
Insert the SPI (Schedule Performance Index). Your trigger becomes SPI<0.85

Earned Value, including items like SPI, CPI and the like are used on multi
billion dollar programs and have international standards set by the various
governments of Australia, England, and the US. The theories are well
documented and understood. I will have to study Trevor's answer more to
understand why he doesn't like them. Generally, the whole world can't be
wrong.
