Doesn't clicking on a spam email encourage more spam? How can I delete an email without clicking on it to do so?

I suspect you have the preview pane displaying the content of selected
e-mails...
I don't. I can therefore select spam and delete it without ever even
seeing the content of the e-mail,

I can see spam and I don't think this is the same as clicking on a link in
it. I use the Nuke messages script to delete after checking. This way they
get nuked at the server. (I have set to delete from server after deleting
form this computer under the Accounts option tab.)

Let me amend that. I use 3 pane view. I can see the messages but do not
click on them. I can tell from the subject if it's spam. If it's one of the
tricky ones, I view but never click on a link. Then I nuke them.
