How to delete/rename templates?

J

John

Hello.

I would really like to be able to delete the current normal.dot
document template I have for Word and replace it with one I saved as
normal2.dot.

I have tried to so far with no success. I'm not sure I even know
where the file is located let alone how I can sort it all out.

I have Windows XP Pro and Office 2000.

Thanks for any help

You really don't want to do this :(
Normal.dot is the underlying template on the back of which everything in
Word works, it does not lend itself to being replaced by a document template
you have created yourself.
Better to use the organizer to copy your personalisations to the original
Alternatively add your template to the user template folder (tools > options
file locations) and create new documents from it.

Please take what Graham has already stated as a warning that if you mess with normal.dot and don't know what you're doing, you could get in trouble. It's best if you understand it first

For a whole bunch more info on normal.dot, see this
http://www.theofficeexperts.com/word.htm#NormalDo

I've found this to be one of the easiest ways to find normal.dot (provided Word is running properly)

Open Word and choose Tools-Options, File locations. Double-click user templates
Hit Ctrl+c (you'll note that the path is already selected and ctrl+c copies it)
Close Word (you can't mess with normal.dot while Word is open)
Hit Start-Run and then Ctrl+v to paste the path. Hit Enter
If you don't see normal.dot, you're likely on XP and aren't viewing hidden or system files

Hope this helps

Cheers for the info.

I really just wanted to be able to open Word and for it to always be
at the settings I want. At the moment the default page it comes up
with has margins, footers and headers that are too big. It's a hassle
to always have to change this or to click on File & New every time to
select the one I saved :(

I'm sure I used to be able to change the normal.dot without any
problems in previous versions of Word, perhaps not now though?

Various options:

1) Have you tried clicking Default when you set your margins? That should
send the changes you've made back to Normal.dot. If those don't take for
some reason, try option 2.

2) Find and edit Normal.dot so that it has the settings you want. Dreamboat
told you how, you can see here for a more extended explanation.
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm

As an alternative to 1 or 2, try:

3) Turn the "File | New, select template, click OK" process into a macro,
and put an icon for it on the toolbar or give it a keyboard shortcut. If you
don't already know how, see these links:

Actually, I forgot that one existed, I just know the Blank one has the
instructions for finding and opening. :) But yes, the Customize one is
much better, now saved.
