How to disable auto receive with Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2003?

D

DougMunday

Using Outlook 2003 - I had been using before we installed Exchange Server
2003 and auto receive could be disabled or activated via Tools, Send/Receive,
Send/Receive Settings. I prefer to NOT have email automatically downloaded
(I know - from all the items posted in the forum, I must be the only one in
the Western Hemisphere who prefers it this way). Now that we have installed
Exchange Server 2003, I can't control the download. Outlook will download
from the exchange server about every minute. Is there a way to disable the
auto receive from Exchange from within Outlook, or must this be controled
from within exchange server? If so, how is this set within Exchange?

Thanks for your help.

What mailserver did you use before and what account type?
What is wrong with File-> Work Offline?

Thanks for the reply. We used an outside ISP SMTP mail server before
installing Exchange.

I tried the File, Offline setting. I am not sure what constitutes 'off
line', but I could not send outside of the office with my Exchange email
account, and I could not send or receive from my other SMTP email account
which I still use, with it checked. I would have to toggle it on and off
whenever I wanted to send and receive email - not what I was looking to do.

I guess my question is - can I control Exchange mail auto receive from
Outlook, or is this a setting within the Exchange setup?

Thanks,
Doug

Work Offline does exactly what it implies; it doesn't hold an active
networkconnection and only uses the local content on the computer. It will
only connect when you manually press the Send/Receive button.

Just curious; why don't you want it to automaticly receive your e-mails? One
of the main things of having an Exchange server is instant (internal)
communication. Anyway; in the Send/Receive Settings dialog press the Edit...
button. Here you can set what the send/receive per account should include.

I guess what I was not clear on - does 'Offline' mean offline to Exchange,
and/or Offline to the outside world. Can I send email to someone else on the
exchange server when Offline? I seem to be able to do that, but not send to
someone 'outside' the office.

Well, I guess I have an aversion to anything happening on my computer
without my knowledge. Its why I don't allow any auto updates, etc. My work
involves really getting my head into deep concentration at times and I find
auto receive email (which I get a ton of) very distracting. So when I take a
break from the main task, I can check my email on my terms.

Now, you indicated that I can use the Tools, Send/Receive settings within
Outlook 2003. Well, those settings are not doing the job (hence this post).
On the Send/Receive dialog, I have the Schedule an automatic Send/Receive
every x UNCHECKED. The Exchange mail object is in this group. I also have
the Tools, Send/Receive, Send/Receive Settings, Disable Send/Received option
CHECKED.

I am becoming convinced there is a setting in Exchange controlling this
behavior. Again, thanks for your help.

No, Exchange doesn't have to do anything with this. Press the Edit... button
in the Send/Receive Groups dialog box.

I'm not sure what going to the Edit..Send/Receive Settings - All Accounts
dialog box will do for me. I see no settings for controlling auto receive on
this dialog! What am I missing? The exchange email object needs to be in
this group, else I could not download mail when I click on Send/Receive.
Confused.

I did as you suggested above, deselected "Receive mail items" and there was
no change in behavior. Outlook still syncs with the Exchange server about
every minute and downloads email if there is any.

I am now having more issues with Exchange and looking for some user
documentation on how to live in co-existance with Exhange.

Thanks,
Doug
