How do I get rid of a 'dot' for a space and a 'flag like looking' symbol for
a return in Outlook 2003 when typing a new message?

Sounds like you're using Word as your email editor, and it's set up to
display non-printing characters. In a new message, do you see a toolbar
button that has a "paragraph mark" symbol? Click it to toggle this off. Or
click Options on the Tools menu and then clicking the View tab. Under
Formatting marks, select or clear the check boxes.
