How to edit autolist of previous email contacts?

When creating a new email and I start typing in the 'to" area an a list of
email addresses as per the alphabetical first letter I have typed comes up
automatically. These are email addresses I have written in but not saved to
my contacts. How do I delete entries in this list?

By highlighting them using the up and sown arrow keys and pressing "delete"
