How to find out (and change) the current line spacing ?

G

Goran Ivanic

Assume I have got a Word (2003) text document.

Now I want to find out two things for e.g. line 132 on page 5:

1.) What is the current line spacing on this line? In other words how much space is
between the current line an the line just before ?
Or does the line spacing always refers to the line just below ???

2.) As far as I know there is another parameter which defines the space between characters
(inside a word). How is this parameter called ?
How can I find out the current value for this property?

How can I change the two settings described above in the whole document?

then post to microsoft.public.word.newusers instead of a group for the
support of Windows XP. Word is NOT part of Windows XP.

Format > Paragraph > Line Spacing

Each line occupies a stripe of space across the page. The line spacing is
the distance from the top of one stripe to the top of the next. The 'extra'
space (if the value is greater than the font size) is added below the font.

2.) As far as I know there is another parameter which defines the space

You may be thinking of 'kerning' - this is irrelevant unless you are working
with a large font size; and is not, in any case, a single value. It is a
distinct value for each pair of consecutive characters.
How can I change the two settings described above in the whole document?

Line spacing is set in the style definition. If you set the value for
normal, it will be inherited by most other styles.

1. Look in Format | Paragraph, Indents and Spacing tab. The distance
between baselines within a paragraph is the Line Spacing. By default,
this is set to "Single," which equals approximately 120% of the
current font size (at least this is true for Times New Roman).
Variable line Spacing is added below each text line.

If you want complete control over line spacing, set it to "Exactly."
Exact line spacing will not adjust as you change the font size. Also,
it will align text across table or text columns.

Note that exact line spacing seems to be added exclusively above the
line (unless the "Don't center 'exact line height' lines"
compatibility option is checked in Tools | Options).

The distance between paragraphs is determined by the Spacing Before
and Spacing After boxes, found in the same dialog box.

2. Kerning adjusts the distance between certain combinations of
characters to make the text look better. Spacing puts all characters
closer or farther apart. Scale stretches or compresses text. All of
these options are found in Format | Font, Character Spacing tab.

You can set the above options for selected paragraphs (Format |
Paragraph) and for selected text (Format | Font) respectively. A
better approach would be to modify the style(s) you are using.

You should better post this in Microsoft Word NewsGroup.

1. Select the paragraph whom formatting you want to line. Click Format menu
and then click Style and Formatting. When the Styles and Formatting Task Pane
open, click below the "Formatting of selected text" drop down menu and click
"Reveal Formatting" or Press SHIFT+F1 to Reveal Formatting. Line spacing
refer two space between 2 lines and can be different for each paragraph and
lines.

2. The parameter is called "Character Spacing". You can find the used
Character Spacing in Reveal Formatting only if it is larger than normal.

3. You can change the Line Spacing by selecting the paragraph and then click
"Line Spacing" Standard Toolbar button or from Format menu - Paragraph or
keyboard shortcut like CTRL+2 for Double, Ctrl+1 for Single, and Ctrl+5 for
1-1/2. For Character Spacing, select the words and then click Format - Font -
click Character Spacing tab and change as you desire.

Hope this information helps you, let us know!

Goran Ivanic,
To find out the exact line spacing click in that line, activate the reveal
formatting task pane. In the paragraph section you will see what line
spacing is active.
Character spacing, (Format - Font - Character Spacing Tab). Is also
revealed in the same task pane under the font section.
To change the settings for the whole document, select the text and apply the
line spacing you want (there is a button on the toolbar for it) for the
character spacing go to the menu mentioned above.

Before we get any deeper in this, are you asking how to find out through the
UI or using VBA? If the latter, you would do well to post in one of the
programming NGs (microsoft.public.word.vba.*).

In general, however, line spacing is set in the Format | Paragraph dialog
and character spacing on the Character Spacing tab of Format | Font. Note
that line spacing is set for an entire paragraph, not a single line, but if
it is set to Single or any other setting aside from Exactly, then larger
characters will cause variations in line spacing.

You can get a complete rundown on the formatting of selected text using the
Reveal Formatting task pane.

G'Day Goran,¶

Turn on Show/Hide (the [¶] button on the toolbar).¶

1. Paragraph Spacing¶

In a paragraph that contains many
lines, the lines will wrap at the
right margin (or right indent) and
the paragraph will end with a
paragraph marker.¶

There can be added space both
before and after a paragraph.¶

This is controlled by:¶
Format>Paragraph¶
Spacing Before/After¶

Some paragraphs are 1 line.¶

There may be many of these.¶

Spacing is still controlled by
Format>Paragraph.¶
Spacing Before/After¶

2. Line Spacing within a Paragraph¶

In a paragraph that contains many

lines, the lines will wrap at the

right margin (or right indent) and

the paragraph will end with a

paragraph marker.¶

Spacing between the lines in
that paragraph is controlled
by:¶
Format>Paragraph¶
Line spacing¶

G'Day (again) Goran,

Character spacing with text is controlled by a combination:
Format>Font
Character Spacing (tab)
Spacing
Kerning

Scale also affects spacing, but changes vertical size as well.
Position affects the vertical position.

G'Day (yet again) Goran,

In general, you change properties throughout a document by:
Edit>Select All (CTRL+A)
Apply the properties to be changed.
