how to fixMS Word 2003 SP-1 corrupts the graphics in the document

Graphics we've used for years in MS Word are now corrupted in Word 2003.
They are either reversed images or duplicated images in the same space as the
single image should appear. This is true on multiple computers but only in
Word, not in Publisher or PowerPoint.
