How to force plaintext authorization for pop3 access?

Hi all,
ever since I switched to Outlook 2007 I am unable to download email from two
accounts. Here is the log of one account:

2006.12.16 23:17:47 POP3 (box.tin.it): Port: 110, Secure: no, SPA: no
2006.12.16 23:17:47 POP3 (box.tin.it): Finding host

2006.12.16 23:17:51 POP3 (box.tin.it): [tx]
2006.12.16 23:17:51 POP3 (box.tin.it): <rx> -ERR invalid proxy password
2006.12.16 23:17:51 POP3 (box.tin.it): [tx] USER (e-mail address removed)
2006.12.16 23:17:51 POP3 (box.tin.it): Disconnected from host
2006.12.16 23:17:51 POP3 (box.tin.it): End execution

The password is correct, and I can download mail with outlook express
without problems here is the log which works:
POP3 Log started at 12/16/2006 23:31:42
POP3: 23:31:46 [rx] +OK POP3 PROXY server ready (7.2.072.1)
POP3: 23:31:46 [tx] USER (e-mail address removed)
POP3: 23:31:47 [rx] +OK Password required
POP3: 23:31:47 [tx] PASS ******
POP3: 23:31:47 [rx] +OK 0 messages
POP3: 23:31:47 [tx] STAT
POP3: 23:31:48 [rx] +OK 0 0
POP3: 23:31:48 [tx] QUIT
POP3: 23:31:49 [rx] +OK POP3 server closing connection

So it seems that Outlook 2007 trips up when using the secure authorization.
Is there any way to disable the secure authorization, and use plaintext USER
like outlook express? Non of the "Secure login" check boxes are checked in
the setup.

BTW the "-ERR invalid proxy password" message only appears if I type my
password *correctly*, if I type the wrong password I get a different error:
2006.12.16 23:41:53 POP3 (box.tin.it): <rx> -ERR ERROR 119 invalid user or
password err 30 <<< typed wrong pass

Thanks for any ideas,

James
