How to Get Word to Recognize Fonts?

N

NYC XYZ

Hi, All:

Another MS Word weirdness...Word '95, anyway!

Yep -- it's all I need -- but I noticed something...it's not
recognizing a font called "script" which WordPad (the freebie in
"Accessories") does!

I'm running WinXP...I believe Word 95/'97 recognized that font under a
previous WinXP installation on another workstation.

PLEASE HELP -- stuff like this drives me batty!!! If it's in my
"Fonts" folder under "Control Panel" why doesn't Word "see" it?? (It's
not a TrueType font, BTW, if that makes any difference, which it
shouldn't...).

TIA!!!

Similar problem here; W98SE, Word 2002. Downloaded a TTF 'Snowdrift',
installed OK in Fonts folder, but Word, WordPad, or any other app can't
see it! What's going on?

TIA also,

Does "'Snowdrift'" appear in Control Panel > Fonts ?
If not, try rebooting. If it was properly installed in the
C:\Windows\Fonts folder, then it should appear after
a boot.

Yes, properly installed, and appears in Control Panel > Fonts.
Rebooted - but no app can see it.

Sorry, NYC XYZ, didn't mean to 'hijack' your OP ;)

The reason may still be the same. If the font can not be printed the
same as it displays on the screen then, by design, it is unavailable
in Word.

You might try selecting some text and typing the font name in the
"Font" combo box on the Formatting toolbar even though it doesn't
appear in the list.

Not at all! It's essentially the same issue. =)

Hi guys

NYC XYZ, Script.fon is a very old system/screen font that dates back at
least to the days of Windows 3.x. It's not meant as a scalable font to
be used in your documents and is bitty, jagged and faint (and butt-ugly
IMO :) I've never seen it used for anything, but it is still installed
by default in XP.

As to it's not showing in Word, in my copy (Word 2000) none of the
installed .FON files are shown. My drop-down list shows only Truetype,
Postscript and printer-resident fonts. You may find that annoying, but
Word is hiding system and non-scalable fonts that would not work or
print well.

Martin, your problem is different. I downloaded a copy of Snowdrift.ttf
from here: http://www.typenow.net/s.htm and installed it. It showed up
in Word 2000 normally and I was able to use it.

It might be worthwhile downloading it again in case you got a corrupted
file. After installing yours, were you able to open and preview it in
the Windows\Fonts folder? I seem to remember that earlier versions of
Word didn't recognise new fonts added after the program had been opened;
you used to have to close it and re-open it before the new font would be
recognised. I don't know if this might be the case with Word 95. But if
other apps beside Word can't see it, it sounds like there might be
something wrong with the font file.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Nightowl.

After the original download, I could open and preview in the Fonts
folder, or double-click in Explorer - same applies now that I've
downloaded it again. I also downloaded two others from typenow.net -
same result.

After unzipping, the TTFs were drag & dropped from TEMP to FONT folder,
the method I've used before. Apparently the other method of installing
fonts is to go to 'Control Panel > Fonts', click on 'File', and select
from the drop-down 'Install New Font'. I wonder if it's significant that
'Install New Font' doesn't appear in my drop-down?

Hi Martin

I use the drag and drop method myself to install and uninstall fonts (to
my fonts_unused folder) and it should work, *provided* everything else
is okay.

But from what you've said it isn't :) The missing menu item could very
well be the cause of the font problem you're seeing. The most likely
reason is that the Fonts folder has lost its system or read-only
attributes. Here's an article that may help:

Missing Menu Commands in the Fonts Folder

Follow the instructions for Windows NT.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

Great! Glad you've got it sorted, Martin, and thanks for the feedback.
