how to give access to files for download?

I'm a coimplete newcomer to this. I'm reading and googling, but
there's a long way to go.

I need to set up a small downloads folder on my personal website,
which people can go to to download documents, pictures and the
occasional music file.

I've created a Downloads folder and dragged a couple of test filkes
into it. But when I try to set up a hyperlink on my index page to the
Downloads folder, I get 'does not exist' message.

What am I doing wrong?

A hyperlink can link to a page (*.htm) -- but not to a folder.
