Hi Mark,
If you actually asked a question it would be easier to answer.
You have a subject title and there is no question or explanation
of what you actually want in the body of your posting.
If you right click on the cell, edit hyperlink,
in the upper right corner is tooltip button, you can enter
a space there and you will come up with an empty tooltip.
If you have nothing there it will revert to normal.

Actually, I am using XL97 and would like to know how to
set hyperlinks to display link address only when cursor
is on active cell.
Tried your solution and no tooltip button is available to me. TIA.

Sorry, David. Neglected to add '?'
No the point is you "must" have your question in the body
of the posting or you are wasting people's time. No one
should have to look back at the subject to see any
part of the question.
If you think your question really stands by itself, and I
don't (see next paragraph), then at least copy and paste the question
from the body into the subject. So that no one wastes
time trying to figure out if the question has really been
delivered or is complete or not. Which text?
I guess if the ScreenTip is not available in
Excel 97 you are out of luck no matter what. But another
interpretation and from your reply this is closer to what
you meant, would be to put the space into the text
to display or "(secret link)" and fill in the screen tip with
the answer.
I did have Excel 97 for awhile, but didn't remember if it
has Screen Tip (not marked as tool tip) in the upper right
corner of the Edit Hyperlink dialog panel.
