how to keep inserted pictures out of the header space/margins

Hi there
I am writing a technical report with plenty of figures. I generally use the
'top-and-bottom' wrapping style and occasionally the 'tight' style. However,
I have a problem that Word then allows these pictures to overlap largely with
the header space and this makes the document presentation look really poor. I
edit the document constantly, so I want the layout to 'auto-adapt' to spacing
changes without moving into the headers.

Any advise please?

Have you tried using the InLineWithText layout propertiy instead of Top and
Bottom.
You will need a Paragraph specifically for the image but this ensures that
the image will never interfere with the Header/Footers and also gives added
functionality because you can apply a Figure/Picture Style that allows
greater control and consistency of your images in the document.

With Top and Bottom layout, have you turned off the "Allow overlap" option
on the Picture Position tab. I am not sure if this feature will affect the
problem you are having.

I prefer 'top and bottom' over 'in line with text' becuase 'top and bottom'
allows me to move the images horizontally, which is quite important to me.
Any way to use 'in line with text' while still allowing for horizontal
positioning?

As mentioned you can apply a style for the graphic and obviously you can have
a paragraph alignment setup as well.
In the Paragraph settings you can have Right, Left, Centred and you can also
use the Indentation for fine tuning if necessary.
Also most importantly you can aplly a Space After/Before to balance you
images in the document body.
I never used Top and Bottom as I find InLineWithText does all and more. The
only other Layouts is Square or Tight for special circumstances.

In line graphics behave like large font characters so as long as you have
the graphic on a line of its own you will not have a problem. You can use
ordinary text formatting to move the image laterally eg CTRL+E will centre
the graphic between the current margins.
