How to Level Resources

Our management team uses Project Server 2003 with a shared resource pool. We
are wondering if there is any good method for leveling resources? We have
heard of two methods. The first is Auto Resource leveling. We tried that
and it seemed to split tasks, which we dont want. The second would be to
make tasks dependent on other tasks due to the fact that they are sharing
resources. This method is also not desired because these tasks really could
happen in parallel (theoretically) but using this method they would be
serialized. Are there better methods than these to resource level?
