Do you mean have one particular cell that cannot be updated/altered bu
the rest can?

Or do you mean have a locked cell but without protecting the work sheet

By default all cells on a sheet are locked when the sheet is
protected.

Select all cells(CTRL + a...........twice in Excel 2003) then go to
format>cells>protection and unlock all.

Now select just the cells you want locked and mark them as locked.

Protect the sheet.
