how to make a 8.5 x 5.25 2-column brochure

I need to make a two-column brochure--measurements: 8.5 (L) x 5.25. (w) if
somebody can be of assistance it will be deeply appreciated. I am using
Microsoft Word 2003. I tried the templates and they are 3-column and for
some reason I had a problem making it 2-column and the size that I want.

I would suggest that you use the "2 pages per sheet" setting for "Multiple
pages" on the Margins tab of Page Setup. Instead of using columns (which can
sometimes be limiting), you will have virtual pages that will behave in
every way like a real page. If your "brochure" is the typical four-panel job
(like a church bulletin), you'll need to either start with page 2 and end
with 1 or print pages 2, 3, 4, 1 (or 4, 1, 2, 3) to get the page order
correct (and that's assuming duplexing).

For more on columns, however, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/UsingColumns.htm. Also, note that if
you are looking in the Office Online template gallery, you might find a
"two-panel" brochure described as a "program" instead of a "brochure." See
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CT101042981033.aspx for a
selection.
